Associate Professor Ts. Dr. Mohd Syamsul Nasyriq Samsol Baharin

About me

Associate Professor Ts. Dr. Mohd Syamsul Nasyriq Samsol Baharin is a prominent member of the diamond and carbon-related materials community, where he has been involved in the research of nano-electronics and power electronics. He is the owner of 6 patents (local and international patents) for the development of advanced material devices, including GaN and diamond, for nanodevices, biosensors, and power field-effect transistors.

Currently, he serves as an Associate Professor at the Institute of Nano Optoelectronics Research and Technology (INOR) at Universiti Sains Malaysia. He leads the III-Nitrides for Power Devices research group, a niche area at INOR, which has been recognized as a HiCoE by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE). In addition to his role at USM, he is a Visiting Scientist at Waseda University and a Research Fellow at the Institute of Nano Electronic Engineering, Universiti Malaysia Perlis, Arau, Malaysia

Dr. Syamsul has been actively contributing to the scientific community through numerous invitations as a keynote speaker at prestigious events both locally and internationally. Some of his notable engagements include the 10th International Forum on Wide Bandgap Semiconductors (IFWS 2024) & 21st China International Forum on Solid State Lighting (SSLCHINA 2024) [November 2024] 2024 at Suzhou International Expo Centre, in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, China, International Conference on Innovation and New Paradigm of Sustainable Science (ICONPASS) 2024 Indonesia [August 2024] and the 3rd International Symposium on Design & Engineering by Joint Inverse Innovation for Materials Architecture (DEJl²MA 2023) in Japan [Oct 2023]. He has also been invited to speak at the 13th New Diamond and Nano Carbon Conference (NDNC 2019) in Taiwan, and the European Materials Research Society Fall Meeting (E-MRS 2018) in Poland. Moreover, he has served as an Invited Judge for the National Nanotechnology Innovations (PIN 18) and as a speaker at the Nanotechnology Olympiad 2017 in Malaysia, among other engagements.

He was formerly a Postdoctoral Researcher at Waseda University, Japan (2017-2018). His Ph.D. research at Waseda University (2014-2017) focused on exploring diamond's potential as a material for power devices. Initially, his research began with single crystalline diamond rods, and later expanded to include polycrystalline and heteroepitaxial diamond substrates for power applications. Notably, he holds the world record for the highest breakdown voltage capability using mechanical grade black polycrystalline diamond, a material that is both cost-effective and suitable for mass production. His groundbreaking work on the reliability of polycrystalline diamond as power devices was highlighted in the article "Black Polycrystalline Diamond Transistors with High Breakdown," published in Semiconductor Today (UK) on November 25, 2016. In recognition of his exceptional contributions, he was awarded the Young Doctoral Scholarship Award for three consecutive years, from 2014 to 2017.

Before his tenure at Universiti Sains Malaysia, Dr. Syamsul was a Researcher at SIRIM Berhad (2010-2014), in the Industrial CI-Nanotechnology department and he received his B.Eng. (Hons) and MSc. from Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) and was the recipient of the Best Dissertation Award 2010 by Malaysia Solid State Science and Technology (MASS).
